Wendi uses colored pencils for all her paintings and all materials she uses are archival. She starts by doing a photo shoot with the subject(s). Whether it be human, horse, or otherwise, the more time spent with them observing them and getting to know them ensures that the painting will be truer. In addition, because colored pencil is labor-intensive and involves so much time 'coloring' it is difficult to draw from life, although reference sketches are also done.

After the shoot a photo is chosen. This photo is enlarged and then traced, graphed and enlarged onto the paper. Because the nature of the medium can make it hard to correct a mistake in composition once a painting has begun it is important to have it laid out correctly before starting. Once this is done the painting can begin.

Colored pencil is transluescent and is mixed right on the paper. Depending on what is being worked on she may mix a few to over a dozen colors to ensure correct tones and hues. Faber-Castell are the pencil of choice for their wonderful colors and the ease they can be blended in a similar manner to that of pastels.. Paintings may take anywhere from 40 hours to 200 hours depending on size and complexity. Please note, although she works from photographs she is not out to copy the photo but to improve upon it, not just by adjusting color and compostion if needed, but by doing her best to capture the best of her subjects. Photos are used merely as tools to achieve this.

After a painting is completed it is sent to a printer who photographs it and prepares it for printing. The original is then delivered and prints and note cards made available. The
original, prints, and note cards are now available. |
